Health Psychology

Health Psychology focuses on the connection between physical health, emotional well-being, and behavior. Medical conditions and health concerns can affect nearly every aspect of daily life, while stress, sleep, pain, habits, and emotional health can also influence physical well-being.

At Terra Psychological Services, health psychology services use evidence-based behavioral and psychological interventions to help individuals better manage health concerns, develop sustainable changes, and improve overall quality of life. Care is collaborative and individualized, with treatment tailored to each person’s health needs, goals, and circumstances.

Sleep & Insomnia

Difficulty falling asleep, staying asleep, or getting restorative sleep can significantly affect physical health, mood, concentration, and daily functioning. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I) is an evidence-based, non-medication treatment for chronic insomnia that addresses the thoughts, behaviors, and sleep patterns that can perpetuate sleep difficulties.

Treatment is individualized and may include strategies to strengthen healthy sleep patterns, improve sleep efficiency, address sleep-related anxiety, and develop skills for maintaining improvements over time.

Chronic Pain

Living with chronic pain can affect mood, sleep, relationships, activity levels, and overall quality of life. Psychological treatment for chronic pain does not suggest that pain is “all in your head.” Instead, it recognizes the complex relationship between the nervous system, physical health, thoughts, emotions, behaviors, and the experience of pain.

Evidence-based approaches, including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Chronic Pain (CBT-CP), can help individuals develop strategies for managing pain, increasing meaningful activity, improving coping, and reducing the degree to which pain interferes with everyday life.

Weight Management & Health Behavior Change

Weight and health behaviors are influenced by many factors, including biology, environment, emotions, habits, stress, sleep, and life experiences.

Using evidence-based approaches, including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Weight Management (CBT-W), treatment focuses on developing sustainable changes in eating and activity patterns, identifying and addressing barriers to change, strengthening motivation, and building skills for long-term weight management. The emphasis is on creating a healthier and more balanced relationship with food while supporting meaningful, realistic, and sustainable health goals.

Smoking Cessation

Quitting smoking can be challenging, particularly when nicotine use has become connected to stress, emotions, routines, or social situations. Behavioral treatment can help individuals better understand these patterns and develop practical strategies for reducing and ultimately stopping tobacco use.

Smoking cessation services use evidence-based behavioral strategies to address cravings and triggers, strengthen motivation, develop alternative coping skills, prepare for high-risk situations, and reduce the likelihood of relapse. Treatment can also complement medication-based smoking cessation interventions when these are being managed by a medical provider.
